Effective September 18, 2017, it will be mandatory to use the newest version of the I-9 form to verify employment eligibility. The newest version of the Form I-9 was published by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on July 17, 2017. The new version has very subtle changes to the form’s instructions and specifically updates List C to reflect the most current version of the Certification of Report of Birth Document issued by the U.S. State Department.
Employers completing the Form I-9 on a computer and E-Verify users will be able to select the newly added Consular Report of Birth Abroad Form FS-240, which is issued to certain employees born overseas to a U.S. citizen parent.
Although the changes to the Form I-9 are minimal, failure to comply by the Sept. 18th deadline can result in significant fines.
